Nothing excites a child going back to school than a new set of school supplies, bags, uniforms, shoes and the like. It is more than a push for a child to eagerly put on his/her new uniform and fashion it to his/her classmates at school. But more important is that in a way, this simple excitement made by the new things they acquire motivates the children to study hard and strive for the best they can.
This is what Kaibigan Ermita Ourtreach Foundation Inc. ensures every year through the annual “Balik Eskwela”, an annual giving of school supplies, bag and the like and awarding of academically outstanding students of the previous academic year, that with every beneficiary packed with complete and brand new equipment is a child motivated to finish studies help uplift his/her family and together with Kaibigan, build an empowered and progressive community.
This 2017, “Balik Eskwela” centered on revisiting the values of education and its importance to individuals to veer away from poverty and its contribution to the community development. This year’s theme, “Edukasyon ay mas may Kalidad sa Nagkakaisang komunidad” resounded through the activity which happened last June 3, 2017 at SASES Basketball Court, Manila.
The program started off with a prayer lead by the Kaibigan Children’s Choir followed by the national anthem. The program proceeded with an opening remark by KEOFI’s Community Work Supervisor, Ms. Ailyn Aniano.
After the introductory part of the program, simultaneously at a separate space on the venue an on-the-spot poster and slogan making contest was being held facilitated by college scholars and community leaders in charge, while Ms. Susana G. Biteng, director of KEOFI and Mr. Jolas R. Pelias reviews Kaibigan’s Policy on educational assistance aimed at refreshing rules and regulations of the organization.
After the policy review, a dance presentation to hoist the energy of the crowd was led by the incoming Senior high school students which the viewers enjoyed.
Following the dance presentation was the return of the awaited and missed “quiz bee” conducted to refresh students with academic mindset to prepare them after a long break on school work which focused on academic and trivial questions on science, mathematics, Philippine history and geography.
Preceded by an energizer through a question and answer activity refreshing and checking the participants’ knowledge on the history of Kaibigan as well as their listening skills which was tested by questions about the program.
Yet to prepare for a special performance an intermission number was presented by the Kaibigan Children’s Choir, letting the crowd hear their angelic voices once more.
Subsequently, to highlight the message of this year’s event of revisiting the value of education a special presentation through a spoken word poetry entitled “Pinili kita” a piece written and performed by a college scholar with selected beneficiaries from elementary, junior high school and senior high school rejuvenated the listeners’ feeling of love, not of romantically, but the feeling of love for education. Indeed the piece was true to its title for it revolved around the students choosing education over various distractions reflecting on the idea of what education can bring in the future.
After the presentation was the awarding of winners of the on the spot poster and slogan making contest and quiz bee, followed by an every year highlight of the event, the awarding of the academically outstanding students. The academically outstanding students have a remarkable total of one hundred three (103) students for this year from elementary, high school and college with general weighted average of 85 and up or 89 for college scholars and 92 for vocational and technological courses.
Lastly, was the most awaited part of the program, the distribution of school supplies which were headed by the KEOFI staff and scholars.
The activity was a success apart from providing educational material support, it also brought forward the importance of education and community development to each participant of the event.
